In ChemBio3D, i was unable to click on any option under Calculations/Mopac interface/ other than "Activate Mopac Ultra" and "About Mopac Interface", therefore i could not follow the instructions for the Chem3D tutorial.

Late breaking news explains the situation. Thanks for pointing it out--Rzepa 13:11, 13 October 2008 (BST). An update. We have finally received an activation key for MOPAC2007. It should have been applied to all the static desktop machines in the dept, but not the laptops! An immediate solution to those is for you to bring your laptop to my office (Room 169) when I will apply the key (it needs to be done by an administrator, which you are unfortunately not).

A quick explanation for why MOPAC2002 was substituted by MOPAC2007. This latter, more up to date module, has been parametrized for far more elements in the period table than the earlier version (around 70 compared to around 35). These include many metals such as the first transition row, and therefore opening up interesting new vistas for inorganic and organometallic explorations! We have not tried these ourselves yet, which is why they have not appeared in any of the experiment modules. So MOPAC2007 was updated in the hope that by making it available at this early stage, new ideas for new experiments (by not only the staff but perchance students as well) may materialize! --Rzepa 14:02, 13 October 2008 (BST)

By the way, unless you are shy, do take the opportunity of signing any contributions here, so that discussion can continue if you wish it amongst yourselves, in the pub etc! (well, perhaps not the pub). --Rzepa 14:03, 13 October 2008 (BST)

A reminder that ChemBio3D is now available under a College wide site license. To qualify, you have to have an Imperial College email account. This allows you to install this program on your own laptop as well as being able to use the provided laptop.--Rzepa 15:09, 13 October 2008 (BST) (and although not directly relevant to this course, links to a page where you can purchase the full Office 2007 suite for <£40).
