- Oh No! Not yet another:
Content management system (CMS)/ Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) - So why should I bother?
- The Ward Cunningham reason: wiki = simple, wiki = fast
- The Tim Berners-Lee reason: The web should be read many/write many!
- The Ted Nelson reason: Everything is intertwingled and non-linear
- The Tim O'Reilly reason: Web 2.0 is here! ( CMS --> wikis)
- The Lemming reason: 1.3 million Wikipedians cannot be wrong?
- The DUS reason: Though shalt create synoptic, modular/interoperable
courses for Bologna compliance! - The Opensource/OpenCourseWare reason. This already provides:
- A complete software enviroment (Apache, php, MySQL, wiki) which is is free
- (even if the support turns out not to be)!
- Table of Contents, index/search tools,
- browser toolbar, stylesheets (Skins), editing/history tools, Googlepedia
- Security and User authentication.
- sophisticated metadata handling (RDF)
- Intertwingling tools
- A complete software enviroment (Apache, php, MySQL, wiki) which is is free
- Its ethos is open and communal.
- You do not need an Imperial College login to view (only to edit!)
- This is the community policy, not an institutional policy!
- The Community reason: I don't have to do it all, others can help:
- OK, lets give it a try:
- Project started 24 May, 2006,
- and designed to evolve continuously during 2006-2007
- As (Ideally) a communal effort between lecturer, postdoc, tutor and student!

The Next Step: The Semantic Wiki
- The wiki allows communal, collaborative creation of an intertwingled set of information and knowledge
- The Semantic wiki formalises the connections with context.
