Report Writing General Procedures

time management

  • yes time management is a large problem for many people (including me!)
  • when deadlines are approaching for large documents I will need AT LEAST 3 working days (this is the bare minimum)
  • as a rule of thumb take how long you think it will take to write something and multiply it by 3
  • if you have large document due soon, be proactive and let me know it is coming, arrange with me a defined feedback session

what you send me

  • DO NOT e-mail me files, files should be loaded into box
  • e-mail me when you want me to assess a new version, provide the FULL PATH
  • file name should follow the format YourName_Label_Date_Version.extension
  • for example: TriciaHunt_ProjectReport_10Feb2018_V1.docx
  • ensure there are NO spaces in the filename
  • examples of Labels include research_proposal, research_report, research_project, conf_abstract etc
  • send me both the original file AND a .pdf
  • you can use Word or Latex

pre-checking requirements

  • for major pieces of work, like final reports and literature reviews, the work MUST have been seen and commented upon by another member of the group
  • in the first instance you should arrange with another member of the group, but I can allocate a buddy if needed
  • you must identify your writing "buddy" on the document, and comment them into the e-mail when you send me the document
  • the purpose of a writing buddy is to help you both, your writing buddy will see what someone else in the group is doing, they will see written work from another perspective and gain from the experience of correcting your work, or of seeing your wonderful writing style! You will gain in terms of improved readability, improved clarity and improved English and from receiving feedback.
  • I will return major pieces of work that have not been looked at and received feedback from another individual in the group
  • I don't expect work to be perfect but I do expect a consistent and purposeful effort to have been made
