File arrangements when writing a paper
- create a top level folder Name_paper_year
- then folders figures and old
- call your draft Name_paper_date eg Tricia_paper_5Nov2017.docx
- if you are using LaTex then label a folder with this name
- all the old versions of drafts are moved into old as soon as a new draft is ready
- for LaTex move the folder into old, make sure both the *.tex and bibliography and *.pdf are present
- for example when Tricia_paper_5Nov2017.docx is formed Tricia_paper_2Nov2017.docx will go into old
- figures will contain all your image files
- In the working document we use quite low resolution figures, say 150dpi
- but when we publish figures in the main paper need to be at 600dp or as large as you can make them so add those files as well.
- you will need files for each figure labeled Fig1 Fig2 etc, this also includes figures in the ESI
- if the image is a simple non-composite image then there will be only two files
- the final image in 600dpi and 150dpi these do NOT need a separate folder
- if you are not sure how to create a 600pdi image ASK, there can be a trick to producing high resolution images for example from ppt
- if the image is a composite image then
- create a subfolder for each figure: FigX and in this folder place
- the files from the original application for example *.cda
- the files converted to the final image format, for example *.tiff
- any files used to make a composite image, for example if you used ppt then add the original *.ppt
- the final composite image in 600dpi
- the final composite image in 150dpi
- if there is only the two files, the final image in 600dpi and 150dpi these do NOT need a separate folder
- the folders will look something like
->folder Figures
->file Fig1_final_600dpi.tif
->file Fig1_final_150dpi.tif
-> folder Fig2
->file Fig2a_orig.png
->file Fig2b_orig.png
->file Fig2_orig.ppt
->file Fig2_final_600dpi.tif
->file Fig2_final_150dpi.tif
->file Fig3_final_600dpi.tif
->file Fig3_final_150dpi.tif
