EndNote (and other bibliographic tool) Tips

EndNote is one of those programs which can be frustratingly obscure when it comes to implementing useful chemical style. One can spend ages sometimes finding out how to do this. This page is a forum designed for people to document what might be a useful tip, for others to discover.

  1. How can one define a Journal abreviation, rather than using the full journal name (the default) when compiling a citation list?
    • This is tested for EndNote X2 (it might change in later versions). Under Tools/Define Term lists , highlight Journals, and then select the Terms tab. You will see all the journals that are currently referenced in your library. Each can have up to 3 abbreviations. Edit eg abbrevation 1 to suit your style. Then in the Edit/Output styles for your selected journal, select journal names and tick Abbreviation 1 as your choice. This will persist for all times that this journal appears in a citation.
