IT:FAQ:software licencing

From ChemWiki

Software licencing

  • Visit the Software Shopfor the latest information on what is available and how to acquire it.
  • Regretfully the 'free' software downloads are not available for undergraduates. The current student price for Microsoft Office Standard is £57.03
  • If you want to use a Microsoft product at home you must complete a Work at Home Licence which must be authorised by the Department. Again UGs are not entitled.
  • Windows is provided as an upgrade only. If you buy a machine with no OS you must also buy a new copy of Windows. Please do not ask IT support staff to install Windows on a machine wich does not have a Microsoft sticker on the case.
  • If you've got a Mac Tiger is available here for £50. There is no site licence

Specialist software for Chemists

  • Archives of useful software are kept on deuterium.ch.ic.ac.uk for Macs and at \\chnts1\winfiles for Windows.
  • Structural search software such as Crossfire Commander for Beilstein and SciFinder for Chemical Abstracts.
  • Free drawing programs such as ChemSketch, IsisDraw
  • A selection of other useful free software, and patches and updates for popular paid for programs.
  • Note if you try to install something that asks for a licence key from these servers it means the software isn't free - you must acquire a licence key from the vendor first.
