IT:FAQ:PCpurchasing

From ChemWiki

HP-Compaq

  • The preferred supplier for Windows and Linux machines. These machines are of a reasonable build quality, are fully supported by ICT. and come with a three year warranty. This should be taken into account before going for a cheaper option which may end up costing more in the long run. ICT may decline to support home made machines.
  • You can order through iProcurement. The standard configurations, about £420 are fine for most requirements.
  • Remember to add a monitor, currently £140 for a 17" flat panel

Apple

. You will have to register yourself with the site.

  • You will end up with a 'Proposal'
  • Order using the proposal number obtained through ICIS in the usual way

Printers

  • Recommended printer supplier is DTP
  • Be sure to get the right configuration for your needs. The Imperial College Approved Products at the top of the pricelist are fine.
  • Only get a colour laser printer if you really need lots of colour output. They are slower and much more expensive to run than monochrome. If you only need the odd colour sheet get a cheap inkjet.
  • 'All-in-one' devices tend to be more trouble than they're worth. Better to get a separate scanner.
  • It is worth getting the extended warranty. There is no-one in the college to fix printers
  • Consumables from Office Depot. Recycled toner is fine.
