Installing Ghemical

Although straightforward on Windows and Mac, there are a couple of pitfalls that should be borne in mind. Installation on Linux is non trivial.

Windows

  • A fairly recent local copy of the program is kept at \\chnts1\winfiles\ghemical. The original is kept here: http://www.uiowa.edu/~ghemical/windows.shtml
  • Ghemical is big, about 1/2 GB - make sure you have space!
  • It must go in C:\ghemical. If you put it in 'program files' it won't work.

  1. Simply copy \\chnts1\winfiles\ghemical to c:
  2. Double-click 'ghemical.reg' (64-bit windows users should use 'ghemical64.reg')
  3. Double click 'setupenv.bat'
  4. Make a shortcut to ghemical.bat and put it on your desktop or in your start menu.
  5. If installing on a shared machine, give users full control on c:\ghemical\tmp

  • To uninstall/upgrade simply delete c:\ghemical and start again.

OS X

The installer is available here. Before trying to install, make sure you have previously installed the X11 option in the system install (this is not selected by default, and you may have to go back to your DVD/CD installer disk and install just that component separately).

After installing Ghemical, try running. If the program does not appear, it is very probable that your X11 application is either not installed, or an old version is present.

The OS X version of Ghemical current does support file export, via loading the OpenBabel conversion library. The Windows version of Ghemical does not currently support this feature.

RedHat Linux

coming shortly when we've figured it out....
