Report Preparation for this component of the course

In your report you should discuss your evaluation of each of the techniques you use here. You should include at least three literature references in addition to the ones given here. To create a report, following the procedure below

  1. Creating a report page
Open Firefox as a Web browser, and install Greasemonkey For Firefox (this is done on a per user basis, and is optional if you want to have your Wiki interface look a little more similar to Word)
  2. Install wikEd (this is done on a per user basis, and is optional)

The private component of your report

  1. The editing environment
You will now need to create your own report page on this Wiki. On the address entry bar of the browser, enter something like the following
    https://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/wiki/index.php/Mod:wzyz1234
where wzyz1234 is in effect a password string for your report.
  2. If your password is unique (as it must be), the system will respond as shown on the right. If not, try another (hopefully more unique) string. When you succeed, proceed to edit the page.
  3. You should now get a rich toolbar along the top of the page which you can use for editing (but only with Firefox. It will not work with IE). Upload all graphics files also with unique names (so that they do not conflict with other people's names) and create your report as a Wikipage. Save and preview constantly. It goes without saying that you should not reference this page from any other page, or indeed tell anyone else its name.
  4. You may wish to use the coordinate files created as part of your work (in CML or Molfile format) to insert rotating molecules for your page. Do so as follows, having first uploaded the coordinate file in the same way that is done for graphical images.
<jmol><jmolApplet><title>Pentahelicene</title><color>white</color>
<size>150</size><script>zoom 200; cpk -20;</script>
<uploadedFileContents>yourmolecule.cml</uploadedFileContents>
</jmolApplet></jmol>
Pentahelicene

When complete, send the URL as shown above to org-8@ic.ac.uk. Important: We have had, in the past, instances of students directly copying another's molecule and orbital diagrams and submitting these in their report. This is considered plagiarism, and if detected will result in disciplinary proceedings. If your diagrams for some reason are lost due to computer failure, please discuss this with the demonstrator.

Public components

In the course of doing the experiments, you may find some aspects of the documentation which does not accord with your experiences, or possibly which you feel can be improved upon. Each module has a discussion area in the Wiki which you can populate for this purpose, and you are encouraged to use it. Substantive comments that are made there by you will be included in the final grading of your report.

Converters to the Wiki format:

If creating a Wiki page directly is not to your liking, you could consider using the converter below. OpenOffice is installed on all the teaching machines. Write your report in Word, save as .doc, open in OpenOffice and export as Mediawiki. Open this (in eg WordPad), copy, and paste into the Wiki editing page.

  1. OpenOffice 2.4/3.0 can read .doc and export to MediaWiki

There is also

  1. Word to Wiki Visual Basic Macros

but this is untested.
